Madeleine Pownall Named UNiDAYS Student Woman of the Year
School of Psychology undergraduate Madeleine Pownall has been named Student Woman of the Year by UNiDAYS for her work on gender equality and female empowerment. As a student at Lincoln, Maddi has completed research projects on gender and identity, and in May, she presented her research on gender stereotypes in children’s books at the British Psychological Society’s Annual Conference. Last year, she founded the Skirts in Schools project, which campaigns for gender equality in school uniform policy. In addition to her impressive research portfolio, Maddi has served as Chair of the BPS Student Committee, Associate Editor of The Psychologist, and Features Editor of DigiPsych.
The competition was launched by UNiDAYS on International Women’s Day 2018, to celebrate the achievements of female students. Candidates were selected through nomination, and there were four other finalists: Queenie Djan of the University of Nottingham, Giulia Olayemi of Queen Mary University, and sixth-form students Amika George and Katie Griffiths. The winner was announced on 7th May, just over a week before Maddi completed the final assignment of her undergraduate degree. As winner, she will receive a prize of £2,000.
Maddi will graduate from the University of Lincoln with a BSc in Psychology in September, after which she will study for a PhD at the University of Leeds.
